About Wingly and flight sharing
Wingly is Europe’s leading flight-sharing platform, connecting passengers with private pilots to share flight costs. Pilots save on expenses while sharing their passion for aviation, and passengers enjoy unique, affordable flying experiences. Wingly makes private aviation accessible to everyone!
In addition, Wingly Pro, launched in 2020, offers flights with commercial operators.
The practice of cost-sharing flights, also known as flight-sharing, is governed by Regulation (EU) No 965/2012, particularly Article 6, paragraph 4bis (a). Currently, the UK CAA has not issued any new regulations on cost-sharing. Until further notice, EASA regulations remain applicable.
For more details on flight sharing in the UK and Europe, please visit our dedicated page.
The price of a shared-cost flight includes the contribution to the direct costs associated with the flight, such as fuel, aircraft rental, landing fees, etc. Additionally, it includes VAT and Wingly's service fees.
Most pilots on Wingly operate single-engine aircraft, which seat 2 to 6 people, including the pilot. The exact aircraft model is specified in the details of each flight.
Wingly Pro flights are offered by our commercial partners. Unlike cost-shared flights, these are not operated by private pilots but are revenue-based. As a result, they are subject to commercial aviation regulations.
Flight booking
You can travel anywhere pilots are ready to go: for a sightseeing flight, a round trip, or a one-way journey. The good news is that pilots are already familiar with your favourite destinations!
Wingly makes it easy to find scenic flights that match your interests. Start by selecting your preferred departure location and browsing the available flights in your area. You can also use filters to search for flights that pass by specific landmarks or offer unique sightseeing experiences.
If you don’t find exactly what you’re looking for, you can contact pilots directly via Wingly to discuss and plan a personalized flight tailored to your preferences.
1. Open the page of the flight you're interested in.
2. Click on "Book this flight".
3. Select the date and number of passengers.
4. Fill in the required details (e.g., availability, passenger information, etc.).
5. Click on "Pay now £XX" to finalize your booking request.
Once your request is submitted, the pilot has up to 48 hours to respond.
Once your booking is confirmed, you will receive a confirmation email. Additionally, you can find all relevant flight details on your Wingly profile under "My Bookings”.
The pilot will reach out to you before the flight via the Wingly messenger or, if preferred, through your phone number or email. You will then coordinate the meeting point and time for your flight.
Yes, it is possible to bring luggage; however, light aircraft have strict weight limitations. It is therefore essential to provide accurate information about the weight of both luggage and passengers when making your booking request.
The pilot will then assess whether the total weight complies with safety requirements for the flight.
Once you arrive at your destination and the flight is complete, the pilot will accompany you to the exit of the airfield.
If it’s your first visit, don’t hesitate to ask your pilot for advice. They will be happy to share their recommendations and point out the best places to explore.
Cancellations and flight changes
The majority of flights on Wingly, apart from Wingly Pro flights operated by commercial pilots, are offered by private pilots. These pilots are not employees of the platform; they organize flights in their free time and share the flight costs with their passengers.
Most flights operate under Visual Flight Rules (VFR), which depend on favorable weather conditions. While pilots always do their best to conduct flights as planned, unforeseen factors such as bad weather or necessary aircraft maintenance may sometimes result in postponements or cancellations. Flight safety always remains the highest priority.
If your pilot cancels the flight and no alternative date can be arranged, you will automatically receive a cancellation confirmation.
For cost-shared flights cancelled more than 48 hours before the scheduled time, we will attempt to find another pilot in the region who can operate the same flight. To increase your chances of finding a substitute pilot, you can modify the departure airport or add additional dates. If you prefer, you can cancel the search, and the amount you paid will be credited to you as a gift card.
If your original flight was scheduled within 48 hours of the cancellation or was booked through Wingly Pro, the paid amount will automatically be credited to you as a gift card.
Cancellation policies vary based on the type of flight booked.
For cost-sharing flights, you may cancel up to 24 hours before the scheduled departure, with the full amount credited back to you as a gift card.
For Wingly Pro flights, once the operator has confirmed the booking, passenger-initiated cancellations are no longer allowed. However, if the operator must cancel due to reasons like poor weather, you’ll receive a full refund in the form of a gift card.
Detailed refund conditions for each flight are specified within each flight’s description.
Contact the pilot using their personal contact details available in your booking on your account. If you don't receive a response within 30 minutes, we recommend heading home and reaching out to us at hello@wingly.io. We will review the situation and work towards finding an appropriate solution.
If the flight did not take place and no alternative date has been found, it must be cancelled on the platform. Only the pilot can cancel the flight after the scheduled date.
If the pilot mistakenly confirms that the flight occurred, you will receive an email to provide your rating. Click on "The flight did not take place" link within 48 hours to block the payment and allow the Wingly team to investigate the situation.
Payments
You can choose from various payment methods: gift card, credit card, or PayPal.
Pre-payment ensures a secure and transparent process while activating the supplementary insurance coverage. Your payment is held by Wingly until the flight takes place. The pilot only receives the funds once the flight is confirmed. If the flight is canceled, the amount is automatically refunded to you as a gift card.
No, tipping is not allowed, and it’s important to follow this rule. Most flights offered on Wingly are private, non-commercial flights. According to the regulation which governs flight-sharing, private pilots are not permitted to make a profit from their flights. To ensure fairness and compliance with the law, Wingly uses a secure online payment system to evenly distribute costs between passengers and pilots.
No, it is not possible to pay the pilot in cash or on-site. Payments must be made exclusively through the Wingly platform, via credit card, gift card, or PayPal.
This ensures compliance with the regulatory framework surrounding shared-cost flights and allows you to benefit from the additional free insurance, as well as the security and trust measures implemented by Wingly.

Yes, you can contact the pilot directly before making a booking request to ask questions about the flight or discuss the details of the experience to plan the perfect flight together. Simply click on the desired flight, and select the "Contact" button. Your message will be sent via the internal Wingly Messenger to the pilot.
Once you have made a booking request, you will also receive the pilot's phone number and email address.
Unfortunately, currently there is no Wingly app. However, our website is fully optimized for use on smartphones and other mobile devices.
Insurance and guarantees
All pilots registered on Wingly undergo a thorough verification process. They are required to submit their pilot licence and medical certificate, which are carefully reviewed by our team to ensure safety and trust on the platform.
Trust and transparency within the Wingly community are actively promoted through our rating system. After every flight, both pilots and passengers have the opportunity to rate each other. These ratings and accompanying comments are publicly displayed on their respective profiles, allowing future users to benefit from the experiences of others.
Additionally, pilots have to list their total flight hours to clearly and transparently showcase their experience and qualifications. This information is available on the pilot's profile.
Each aircraft in general aviation is insured with liability coverage that safeguards passengers, their baggage, and third parties on the ground.
In case the mandatory insurance proves insufficient, Wingly has established a partnership with its broker SAAM Verspieren to secure an insurance policy with Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty SE (AGCS).
Our complementary flight-sharing insurance is free and automatically included for all flights booked on Wingly (excluding Wingly Pro flights, where insurance is provided by the commercial operator conducting the flight).
For more details on insurance coverage, please visit the Insurance section on our website.
Joining Wingly
Wingly is the first flightsharing platform in Europe. Through our platform, we connect passengers with private pilots that have empty seats and wish to share the costs of a flight. Pilots share their passion for aviation and get to share the cost of flying, and passengers get to experience a flight in a light aircraft and see incredible landscapes from above at low prices.
By offering private flights at lower costs and getting more people to fly, Wingly shows that private aviation is not just a luxury reserved for the elite. Mankind's oldest dream is democratised and becomes accessible to all, thanks to Wingly.
Yes. According to the European regulation, (see art. 6 paragraph 4a regulation (EU) no. 965/ 2012) pilots are allowed to share flights as long as the aircraft does not exceed 6 seats and has a non-complex power unit. Pilots are only allowed to share the direct costs of the flight, they cannot make any profit. Wingly's policy is that the pilot pays the same share of the flight as the passengers, or more. We have received written confirmation from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), stating that flight sharing and the advertising of flights are completely legal, as long as the pilots do not generate profit from the flights. We have also signed a Safety Charter with the EASA to promote a safety culture for our community. We also have another confirmation letter from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) in the UK. In other words, because the flight remains a private one, the pilot does not need a commercial pilot’s licence to share their costs with passengers.
For rented planes, allowable shared costs include rental and fuel costs (rental plus fuel for “dry rate” planes, full rental cost for “wet rate” planes). Pilots flying their own aircraft can share fuel expenses and airport landing and tie-down costs associated with the trip. The Wingly system does not allow amounts paid by any passenger to exceed their pro-rata share of the above costs.
Flights organised on Wingly may be subject to delays or cancellations due to bad weather conditions or pilot/aircraft unavailability. The pilot is the sole master of the "Go - No Go" decision and has the duty to inform his passengers of any change concerning the flight as soon as possible by phone, Wingly messenger or e-mail. In addition, Wingly automatically notifies passengers. Finally, if pilots and passengers find a new date to fly, it is preferable to reschedule the flight rather than cancel it.
You can verify yourself by uploading a photo of your current flying licences with the last ratings and a valid medical certificate. Wingly will then manually verify your profile.
On Wingly, you are the pilot and you choose who you want to fly with. When your passengers request to book, they will put in their weights and their availability and then it's up to you to see who you want to fly with and accept their requests.
Passengers have to enter the total weight of each person in their party and any luggage when booking. You can then decide whether to approve the passenger on your flight or not, depending on their weight.
Making the most out of using Wingly
Wingly is absolutely free to use for pilots. You can post as many flights as possible and are able to share as many flights as you'd like. Our pilot support team is equally available to help you make the most out of your Wingly experience.
This is very simple. You add your bank account information on Wingly and then you get sent a direct wire of their share of the costs. Once you confirm the flight has taken place, there is a 48-hour window until our payment provider will wire you the money via secure bank transfer.
A flexible flight allows you to offer your availabilty to passengers for routes you would like to fly. For example, if you like flying certain days of the week, you can post a flight as flexible. Passengers will be able to select dates based on your availability to make a booking. It will still be up to you to accept the flight based on your final availability.
When adding a flight, you can set a fixed price for a seat. If your flight is longer than estimated, we are sorry to inform you that there is no way of getting a higher amount of money. Please ensure that you calculate the appropriate costs of the flight beforehand. If you have to make an unplanned diversion, please contact us at tower@wingly.io and we will be available to answer any questions.
You and your passengers will have access to each others contact details once you accept a booking request from them to chat further and finalise additional details to plan the day of the flight. Any exchange of contact details prior to a booking is prohibited and your account will be suspended if this is abused.
When adding a flight, you will have to set a meeting point. On the day of the flight, you will need to meet the passengers at the agreed-upon location. In addition, you will also be able to see the passenger’s phone number to notify them of any last-minute changes. The passengers will also see your phone number after the booking has been approved.
After a passenger has made a booking on a specific flight you offer, you simply have to accept it and therefore secure the payment. Once a booking request is placed, you will receive a notification from us via email and SMS. Please be aware that unanswered booking requests get automatically declined after 2 days. Even if you are unavailable to fly with the person on that date, you can always reschedule to fly with them another time.
If your flight did not take place and you had passengers booked on the flight, please ensure you cancel on Wingly website. If you want to reschedule the flight, please ensure to notify your passengers and keep them updated with the status of the flight. You can always cancel the flight as well and your passengers will be automatically and fully refunded.
Our cancellation policy is dependent on the flight that you have purchased: a cost sharing flight with a private pilot or one of our commercial "Wingly Pro" flights.
For our cost sharing flights the passenger has the option to cancel a flight up to 24 hours prior to departure. If the passenger wants to cancel within the 24 hours leading up to the flight, it is up to your discretion whether you (the pilot) accept or refuse the cancellation request. If the passenger has any questions regarding the cancellation, you can advise the passenger to contact us at hello@wingly.io
Our commercial "Wingly Pro" flights cannot be cancelled by the passenger once the operator has confirmed the booking. Any cancellation rules that are specific to a certain flight must be clearly stated in the description.
After every scheduled flight, you and the passenger receive an automatic email from us. If the flight does not go ahead, both you, the pilot and the passenger have up to 48 hours after the date of the flight to notify us that the flight did not happen.
Whether it is a discount coupon or a Gift Card, the passenger will need to enter the voucher code at checkout when paying for the flight of their choice on Wingly. You as a pilot will still be paid their share of the cost.
Wingly Pro flights are flights offered by partner commercial aviation organisations. These flights differ from cost-shared flights by private individuals as the flights are made for profit and fall under commercial regulations.
Our cancellation policy depends on the type of flight: a cost-sharing flight with a private pilot or a commercial "Wingly Pro" flight. For our cost-sharing flights, the passenger has the option to cancel a flight up to 24 hours before departure. If the passenger wishes to cancel their flight within 24 hours of departure, you may accept or deny their request. If the passenger has any questions regarding the cancellation, you can direct them to our teams and invite them to contact the following address hello@wingly.io. As for our commercial "Wingly Pro" flights, they cannot be cancelled once the reservation request has been confirmed by the operator. If any specific cancellation conditions apply to your flight, they must be clearly stated in the flight's description. As soon as a flight is scheduled, you and the passenger receive an automated email from us. In the event that the flight doesn't take place, the pilot and the passenger have up to 48 hours after the date of the flight to inform us that the flight did not take place.
Whether it be a discount voucher or a gift card, the passenger will only have to enter the code printed on their coupon when paying for the flight of their choice on Wingly to deduct the discount from the total flight amount.
Wingly Pro flights are operated commercially by partner aviation organisations. These flights differ from flights operated privately as part of cost-sharing between private pilots and passengers. In fact, Wingly Pro flights are operated commercially and for profit in compliance with the associated regulation for the specific type of flight.
