Piper is a light aircraft manufacturer that was founded in the US in 1927. The brand gained its vast recognition in the 20th century. From the 1930s, thousands of models of the Piper Cub (or J-3) were built and Piper became one of the drivers of the democratisation of light aviation. The Piper Cub to light aviation is the Ford T to the car. Interestingly, in the 1940s, during the Second World War, the United States used the J-3 as a training, observation and evacuation plane for the wounded.
The cost of these aircraft has evolved greatly over time. Interestingly, $1,300 (£980) could buy you a new J-3 in 1937. The Piper society is now owned by Sultan of Brunei.
The PA-28 is a plane widely represented in UK flying clubs. It is a classic train plane with a continental motor and is engine easy to handle.
