A big name in civil and military aviation. The Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation was created in 1929 by Leroy Grumman. If this name rings any bells, it is probably because Grumman went on to ally with Northrop, another aircraft manufacturer, to give birth to Northrop Grumman, one of the largest arms companies in the world today.

The first activities of Grumman are closely linked to the American army and to the US Navy. It was its F4F and F6F fighters that contributed to the popularity of Grumman.

Being very involved in the arms and aerospace industry (notably the Apollo mission), Grumman was forced to take a strategic turn at the end of the Cold War due to the slowdown in the arms race and the space conquest. It was in 1994 that Grumman and Northrop merged.
