Alexander Schleicher GmbH & Co was formed in 1927 by its eponymous founder, with funds he won in a gliding competition. The company is the oldest sailplane manufacturer in the world and is still managed by Alexander's descendants to this day. They are located in the Wasserkuppe mountain range which is considered the birthplace of German gliding and was even the site of the world's first glider pilot school. Alexander Schleicher have continued to innovate to this day, with modern designs featuring composite materials such as fiberglass and carbon fiber, and even a self-launching electrically-powered model which does not require a bungee or tow-plane to launch.
